Isaiah Mungro is a young fantasy author from Washington, DC and the creator of Hell Can Wait.

Born at just 22 weeks, Isaiah overcame extraordinary medical challenges early in life and developed a determination that continues to shape his work today. He is legally blind in one eye, but has never allowed that to limit his ambitions.

Chapter 1: Another Day in Paradise

Marcus Smith had learned a long time ago that keeping your head down was the best survival strategy at Jefferson High. At fifteen, he’d mastered the art of becoming invisible—hunching his shoulders just right, timing his hallway walks between class changes, and never making eye contact for too long.

It didn’t always work.

"Yo, Marcus! Nice shoes, man. Did you get those from the Goodwill clearance rack?"

Derek Matthews and his crew blocked the hallway, their laughter echoing off the lockers. Marcus glanced down at his worn sneakers—the ones his foster mother, Linda, had tossed at him three months ago with a grunt about "making them last."

"Just trying to get to class," Marcus muttered, attempting to sidestep.

Derek moved with him, a predator’s grin spreading across his face. "What’s the rush? Don’t you wanna hang with us?"

"Leave him alone, Derek."

The voice belonged to Tasha Williams, one of the few people at Jefferson who’d ever bothered to learn Marcus’s name beyond using it as a punchline. Derek rolled his eyes but stepped aside.

"Whatever. Orphan boy ain’t worth the time anyway."

Marcus hurried past, Tasha falling into step beside him. "You good?" she asked.

"Yeah. Same as always."

"You know you could report them, right?"

Marcus almost laughed. Report them to who? The guidance counselor who could barely remember his name? The principal who’d once called him "Michael" for an entire meeting? The foster care system that had bounced him between seven homes in ten years before landing him with Linda, who spent most of her monthly check on lottery tickets and boxed wine?

"I’m good, Tasha. Really. But thanks."

She studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. See you in History."

The rest of the school day passed in its usual blur of half-listened lectures and carefully avoided confrontations. Marcus sat in the back of every classroom, completed just enough work to avoid attention, and counted down the minutes until the final bell.

Home wasn’t much better than school, but at least it was quiet.

The apartment was empty when Marcus unlocked the door—Linda was probably at the casino or her boyfriend's place. The silence was almost comforting. Marcus dropped his backpack by the sagging couch, grabbed a sleeve of crackers from the mostly-empty kitchen cabinet, and was about to settle in for an evening of homework when he heard it.

A sound like thunder, but wrong. Too sharp. Too close.

The whole apartment shook, picture frames rattling against the walls. Marcus ran to the window and looked out toward Morrison Park, three blocks away.

Smoke rose from the baseball diamond.

"What the hell?" Marcus grabbed his jacket and ran.

Morrison Park was deserted except for the crater in the middle of what used to be second base. It wasn’t large—maybe six feet across—and the edges still smoldered slightly, the grass blackened and curling. Marcus approached slowly, half-expecting someone to jump out and yell at him for being there. But the park remained empty, the evening shadows growing longer.

In the center of the crater lay something small. Marcus slid down the shallow depression, the dirt still warm beneath his sneakers.

The object was a necklace—a simple cord with a tan stone pendant about the size of a quarter. The stone was smooth, almost perfectly oval, with faint markings that might have been natural striations or might have been something else. It was completely ordinary and completely out of place.

Marcus picked it up. The stone was cool despite the heated earth around it, and surprisingly light. He turned it over in his palm, looking for... what? A label? Instructions? Some indication that this thing had just fallen from the sky?

Nothing.

"Probably just some garbage that was already here," he muttered. But he slipped the necklace into his pocket anyway. Finders keepers, and it wasn’t like he owned much worth keeping.

Back at the apartment, Marcus examined the necklace under his desk lamp. The markings were definitely intentional—tiny symbols that reminded him of hieroglyphics or maybe circuit diagrams. But the stone itself seemed completely normal. Just a rock on a string.

He slipped it over his head, tucking it under his shirt. And waited.

For what, he wasn’t sure. Lightning bolts from his fingertips? Super strength? X-ray vision? He’d read enough comics, watched enough movies. Meteor crashes, mysterious artifacts—these things came with power, with purpose, with transformation.

Marcus waited. Nothing happened.

He tried concentrating, imagining energy flowing through him. Nothing. He tried speaking to it, feeling ridiculous as he whispered "activate" and "power up" to an empty room. Nothing.

By midnight, Marcus had accepted the obvious truth: it was just a necklace. A weird one, sure, but just a necklace. He fell asleep with it still around his neck, dreaming of ordinary things—homework he’d forgotten, Derek’s mocking laughter, the perpetual empty feeling of Linda’s apartment.

Morning came with the usual sounds—sirens in the distance, neighbors arguing through thin walls, and the buzz of Marcus’s ancient alarm clock. He showered, dressed, grabbed a Pop-Tart, and headed to school, the necklace still hidden beneath his shirt. It had become strangely comfortable overnight, easy to forget it was even there.

"Yo, Marcus!"

His stomach tightened. Derek and his crew were posted up by the front entrance, right where Marcus needed to walk.

"Heard there was some excitement at Morrison Park yesterday," Derek called out. "You see anything?"

Marcus shrugged. "Just some smoke. Probably fireworks or something."

"Fireworks? Man, you’re dumb. That was a meteor, like from space." Derek laughed. "Probably came down looking for intelligent life and gave up when it got to your neighborhood."

His friends cracked up. Marcus kept walking.

The day continued its predictable pattern. Pop quiz in Math—Marcus got a C. Group project in English—Marcus got stuck with the kids who wouldn’t do any work. Lunch alone in the corner of the cafeteria, watching Tasha laugh with her actual friends at a table full of people who belonged.

After school, Marcus walked home through Morrison Park. The crater was still there, though someone had put up caution tape around it. A few people stood nearby, taking pictures.

"Excuse me, young man." An older woman in a city parks uniform approached him. "Did you see what happened here yesterday?"

"No ma'am. Just heard the noise."

"Hmm. Well, if you remember anything, here’s my card." She handed him a business card for the Parks Department. "We’re trying to figure out what kind of damage we’re looking at."

Marcus nodded and kept walking.

At home, Linda was actually there for once, sprawled on the couch watching a reality show about people yelling at each other.

"There’s mac and cheese in the cabinet if you’re hungry," she said without looking away from the TV. "And don’t forget, rent’s due next week. Your check better be in on time."

Marcus’s "check" was the monthly foster care payment. He’d never seen a dollar of it.

"Yes, ma’am."

He retreated to his room, pulled out his homework, and absently touched the necklace through his shirt.

Still nothing. No powers. No transformation. No escape from the small, gray life he’d been living for as long as he could remember. Just Marcus Smith, invisible orphan boy, with a weird necklace he couldn’t explain and a future he couldn’t imagine.

Outside his window, the city carried on, indifferent to meteors and mysteries and lonely fifteen-year-old boys who hoped—despite knowing better—that maybe, just maybe, something extraordinary could happen.

But it didn’t. And Marcus was beginning to think it never would.

Chapter 2: The Breaking Point

Marcus woke to the sound of his alarm and the familiar weight of dread settling in his chest. The necklace still hung around his neck, warm against his skin—warmer than it had been yesterday, actually. He touched it briefly, felt nothing unusual, and got ready for school.

The morning news played on the small TV in the kitchen while Marcus poured himself a bowl of off-brand cereal. The milk was two days past expiration, but he’d had worse.

"-still investigating the mysterious impact at Morrison Park," the news anchor was saying. Marcus looked up. Footage of the crater filled the screen, now surrounded by official-looking people in safety vests. "The Parks Department, in conjunction with local authorities, is urging anyone with information about yesterday’s incident to come forward. Police are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the impact or removed any materials from the scene."

Marcus’s hand went to the necklace under his shirt.

"Preliminary tests of the impact site show unusual radiation signatures," the anchor continued. "Authorities stress there is no immediate danger to the public, but the area remains closed pending further investigation. City officials have also confirmed that the object responsible for the crater has not been recovered. If you have any information—"

Marcus turned off the TV. His stomach churned, and it wasn’t from the expired milk.

Jefferson High looked the same as it always did—imposing brick walls, clusters of students gathered in their usual social hierarchies, and the smell of cafeteria food and teenage anxiety mixing in the air.

Marcus was halfway to his locker when he spotted her.

"Marcus! Hey, wait up!"

Tasha jogged over, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders. She was one of those people who always seemed put together—neat braids, clean sneakers, a smile that looked genuine. Marcus had never understood why she bothered being nice to him.

"You see the news this morning?" she asked, falling into step beside him.

"About the meteor? Yeah."

"They’re saying it was radioactive or something. My mom’s all freaked out, like we’re gonna turn into mutants." Tasha laughed, but there was an edge to it. "Did you go check it out? I know you live near Morrison Park."

Marcus hesitated. "Yeah, I walked by. Just looked like a regular crater to me."

"A regular crater. Right." Tasha grinned. "Because we get those all the time in the middle of baseball diamonds."

Despite himself, Marcus almost smiled. "You know what I mean."

They reached his locker, and Tasha leaned against the one next to it. "So, real talk—you doing okay? Derek and his goons have been worse than usual lately."

"I’m fine."

"Marcus." She said his name like a statement, not a question. "You’re always 'fine.' But you don’t have to be, you know? It’s okay to not be okay."

Before Marcus could respond, a familiar voice cut through the hallway noise.

"Well, well, well. If it isn’t the orphan and his charity case friend."

Derek Matthews swaggered over with his usual entourage—Jake and Chris, both built like linebackers, both grinning like hyenas.

"We weren’t talking to you, Derek," Tasha said, her voice sharp.

"Nah, but I’m talking to you." Derek’s eyes locked on Marcus. "Heard the cops are looking for whoever messed with that meteor crash. That wasn’t you, was it, Marcus? Finally decided to touch something that doesn’t belong to you? Oh wait—nothing belongs to you. Not even the clothes on your back, right? Those are state-issued."

Jake and Chris laughed on cue. Marcus’s jaw tightened. He focused on his locker combination, trying to block them out.

"I’m serious, though," Derek continued, stepping closer. "Did you take something from that crater? 'Cause the news said they’re offering a reward for information. I could use some extra cash. Maybe I should tell them about you skulking around there yesterday."

"Leave him alone, Derek," Tasha said, moving between them.

"Or what? You gonna protect him? Man, Marcus, even your friends are girls. That’s just sad."

The hallway had gone quiet. Other students watched with that hungry look people get when they smell blood in the water—not caring enough to intervene, but interested enough to see what happens next.

"Back off," Marcus said quietly, still focused on his locker.

"What was that? Speak up, orphan boy. Use your big boy voice."

Something hot flared in Marcus’s chest. The necklace suddenly felt burning hot against his skin.

"I said—" Marcus turned to face Derek, "—back off."

For a moment, Derek’s eyes widened slightly, like he’d seen something that surprised him. Then the moment passed, and his sneer returned.

"Yeah, that’s what I thought. Come on, guys. Let’s let these losers get to class."

They walked away, Derek’s laughter echoing down the hallway. Tasha touched Marcus’s arm gently. "You okay?"

"Fine," Marcus said automatically. But his hands were shaking as he opened his locker.

"Listen," Tasha said softly, "I know things are rough. With school, with your foster situation. But if you ever need to talk, or just... I don’t know, exist around someone who doesn’t suck, I’m here. Okay?"

Marcus looked at her—really looked at her—and saw genuine concern in her eyes. It made something in his chest ache.

"Thanks, Tasha. Really."

She smiled. "Anytime. Now come on, we’re gonna be late for first period."

The rest of the school day was a blur of humiliation. Derek "accidentally" knocked Marcus’s lunch tray out of his hands in the cafeteria, sending food sprawling across the floor while everyone laughed. In gym class, Marcus got picked last for teams—again—and spent forty-five minutes being a human target in dodgeball. By the time the final bell rang, Marcus felt scraped raw, like every part of him had been exposed and found wanting.

He walked home through Morrison Park, where the caution tape now fluttered in the wind. The woman from the Parks Department was there again, talking to a police officer. She looked up as Marcus passed.

"Excuse me—young man! You’re the boy from yesterday!"

Marcus’s heart jumped, but he kept walking.

"Wait! I just want to ask you a few questions!"

He didn’t stop. He couldn’t. Not with the necklace burning like a brand against his chest, not with the weight of the day crushing down on him, and not with the fear that if he stopped moving, he might break apart completely.

The apartment was dark and empty when Marcus got home. Of course it was.

Linda’s car wasn’t in the parking lot. Probably at the casino, or the bar, or wherever she went to forget she was responsible for a fifteen-year-old kid she’d never wanted in the first place.

Marcus dropped his backpack by the door and stood in the silent living room. The walls seemed to press in on him. The peeling paint, the water stains on the ceiling, the smell of old cigarettes and disappointment—it was suffocating.

He thought about Tasha’s kindness, which only made Derek’s cruelty hurt more. He thought about the news, about the police looking for whoever took something from the crater. He thought about Linda, who took money meant for him and gave him nothing but a place to sleep.

He thought about how tired he was of being invisible, of being unwanted, of being nothing.

Marcus’s hand went to the necklace, gripping it hard.

"What’s the point?" he whispered to the empty room. "What’s the goddamn point of any of this?"

The necklace pulsed warm in his hand. Warmer than before. Almost hot.

"You’re supposed to be special, right? Some meteor from space, some magical artifact?" His voice rose, cracking with frustration. "Well, where’s my power? Where’s my escape? Where’s anything that makes this worth it?"

The necklace was burning now. Marcus pulled it away from his chest, ready to rip it off, ready to throw it against the wall and watch it shatter.

"I hate this! I hate all of it! I hate—"

Light.

Blinding, searing, impossible light erupted from the stone. It filled the apartment, whited out the world, and erased everything Marcus knew.

And then—

Chapter 3: Welcome to Hell

Marcus’s eyes snapped open.

Wrong. Everything was wrong.

The sky was black—not night-black, but a deep, oily black that seemed to absorb light rather than merely lack it. The air tasted like copper and ash. And the city...

Marcus pushed himself to his feet, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing.

The city was ruined. Not abandoned-ruined or old-ruined, but destroyed. Buildings rose around him like broken teeth, their windows shattered, their walls scorched and crumbling. Some structures had collapsed entirely, leaving skeletal frameworks of twisted metal and concrete. The streets were cracked and buckled, with chasms splitting the asphalt like open wounds.

But the wrongness went deeper than destruction.

The buildings were too tall, their architecture alien and angular. Strange symbols marked many of the walls—not graffiti, but something that looked almost organic, like they’d grown there. And floating in the air, drifting like luminescent snow, were particles of fine dust that caught what little light existed and glowed with a faint purple sheen.

"Where..." Marcus’s voice came out as a rasp. "Where am I?"

As if in answer, text appeared in his vision. Not on a screen. Not projected. Just... there, floating in the air in front of him, bright red letters that shouldn’t exist:

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[You have broken through your limits]

[Your body has awakened to mana]

[Mana has begun to circulate through your body]

[You have accomplished the impossible!]

[You have entered HELL difficulty with the lowest level of all]

Marcus’s heart hammered in his chest. This couldn’t be real. He was dreaming. He had to be dreaming. Maybe he’d fallen asleep at home, maybe—

A sound cut through his thoughts. A low, grinding noise, like stone scraping against stone. Marcus spun around and froze.

In the plaza behind him, jutting up from the cracked ground like crystals from a geode, were massive purple formations. They caught the dim light, casting eerie reflections across the ruined cityscape. Each crystal was easily ten feet tall, their surfaces smooth and multifaceted.

Beautiful. Valuable.

Marcus’s street instincts kicked in before his panic could fully take hold. Those crystals looked like amethyst, or something even more precious. If this was real—and his rational mind was screaming that it couldn’t be, but if it was—then those crystals might be worth something. Might be his ticket out of poverty, out of Linda’s apartment, out of everything.

He took a step toward them. Then another.

The fine purple dust swirled more thickly here, dancing in the air like glitter. Pretty, in a way. Marcus reached out toward the nearest crystal.

And breathed in.

The dust entered his lungs.

[STATUS AILMENT: POISONED]

[You have been PARALYZED]

Pain. Immediate, searing pain that felt like his lungs were being filled with broken glass. Marcus gasped, which only pulled more of the toxic dust into his body.

[Stamina will be drained constantly]

Marcus tried to scream, but his throat wouldn’t work. He could only watch, helpless, as more notifications appeared:

[HP: 87%]

[HP: 64%]

[HP: 41%]

This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening. He was just a kid from Baltimore, an orphan, a nobody. He couldn’t die like this, alone in some impossible nightmare world, choking on poisoned air.

[HP: 18%]

Marcus’s vision darkened at the edges. Through the haze of pain, he saw one final notification appear:

[You have died to Fine Dust Lv. 1]

[Total Survival Duration: 00d 00hr 04m 32s]

Four minutes. He’d lasted four minutes.

The last thing Marcus saw before the darkness took him was the purple crystals glinting in the black light, beautiful and worthless and utterly indifferent to his death.

Chapter 4: Trial by Death

Marcus’s eyes opened. He was alive.

That didn’t make sense. He’d died. He’d felt himself die—the poison eating through his lungs, his vision fading to black, the finality of that last notification.

[QUEST RECEIVED]

[First Night in Hell]

Objective: Survive until sunrise

Reward: ???

Failure: Death

Marcus pushed himself up, gasping. His lungs felt normal. Perfect, even. Like the poison had never touched him. He looked around wildly and realized he wasn’t in the plaza anymore.

He was inside some kind of shelter—a small, abandoned structure with crumbling concrete walls and a partially collapsed roof. Dim light filtered through the cracks, casting everything in shades of gray and purple. The fine dust still swirled in the air, visible even here.

"What the hell?" Marcus whispered. His voice echoed in the empty space.

[Current Level: 1]

[HP: 100/100]

[MP: 50/50]

[Status: Normal]

The notifications hovered in his vision, persistent and impossible to ignore. Marcus waved his hand through them again. Still nothing.

"Okay. Okay, think." He pressed his palms against his eyes. "This is a dream. Has to be a dream. Or I’m dead. Or I’m crazy. Or—"

He breathed in. The dust entered his lungs.

[STATUS AILMENT: POISONED]

[You have been PARALYZED]

Not again. NO—

[HP: 89%]

[HP: 67%]

[HP: 45%]

[HP: 22%]

Marcus jerked awake with a scream caught in his throat. The shelter. He was back in the shelter. Alive again.

"No, no, no—" He clamped his hand over his mouth and nose, trying not to breathe. But his lungs burned, demanding air. He couldn’t hold it forever.

He breathed.

[STATUS AILMENT: POISONED]

[You have been PARALYZED]

Wait. Ninety-one percent? Last time it had dropped faster than that.

[HP: 91%]

[HP: 71%]

[HP: 50%]

[HP: 28%]

[HP: 0%]

Marcus tried to crawl toward what looked like a less dusty corner, but his paralyzed limbs wouldn’t cooperate.

This time Marcus tried breathing shallowly, taking tiny sips of air through his shirt. It helped. A little.

Marcus’s eyes widened. Resistance? The system was tracking—

Each death was agony. Each respawn was a fresh nightmare. But Marcus was learning.

He focused on his breathing. In through the nose, slow and controlled. Out through the mouth. Like the meditation video he’d watched once in health class, back when he’d thought his biggest problems were pop quizzes and foster home transfers.

In. Out. In. Out.

But the paralysis was weaker now. His fingers could still twitch. His survival time was increasing—fifteen minutes, then eighteen, then twenty-three.

Death number twelve. Or was it thirteen? Marcus had lost count.

His breathing technique was getting better. Slower, deeper breaths seemed to filter out some of the poison. Not all of it, but enough to buy him more time.

Marcus could move now, even after being poisoned. Just barely, but he could drag himself across the floor, searching for cleaner air. There wasn’t any.

Death twenty-two.

The pain was less now. Still there, still burning through his veins, but dulled. Manageable. Marcus sat against the wall and counted his breaths, focusing on the rhythm, on staying calm, on surviving just one more minute.

Death twenty-eight.

Marcus opened his eyes and immediately started his breathing technique. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Controlled. Steady.

But this time, something was different. The notifications flashed, but his HP didn’t drop. It held steady at 100%.

Marcus stared at the notifications, his breath coming in ragged gasps—not from poison, but from relief so intense it felt like drowning.

"I’m... I’m not dying?"

He waited. Five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.

[HP: 100/100]

Nothing changed. The poison was still there—he could feel it in his lungs, his blood—but it wasn’t killing him anymore. It was part of him now.

Marcus laughed. It came out cracked and slightly hysterical, echoing in the empty shelter. He’d died twenty-eight times, and now—finally—he could breathe.

A thought struck him. He’d never actually tried to interact with the system before—he’d just panicked and died repeatedly. What if it responded to intent rather than voice commands?

He had the whole weekend before he had to face Jefferson High again.
